Yohji Yamamoto fall 1994-95
Yohji Yamamoto returns to his roots building his spring collection around the traditional kimono with its long graceful lines, intricately tie-dyed or hand-printed.The oriental esthetic is already being worn in Paris. Another designer on the same wave-length is John Galliano, the London designer, who has long been an exponent of a kimono revival, his evolving from the 1910 Edwardian period. Yohji’s kimonos evoke the canvases of James McNeill Whistler of the 1860’s and 1870’s, when there was a great Japanese influence after Commodore Matthew Perry’s historic 1853 trips to Japan and the opening of that country’s culture to Westerners, Yohji’s collection signals a fresh look inspired by an ancient style.
